An individual and a community should possess relevant information about themselves, their physical environment and social environment and use such information to the greatest possible effect if they are to arrange their life reasonably and efficiently meet personal and social challenges.

In this lesson, you will discover the necessity of promoting media and information literacy as preparing people to the new conditions of professional activities and everyday life in an extremely sophisticated information environment.

Particularly, after completing this lesson, you are expected to

  1. Explain the concept of media and information literacy;
  2. Point out the impact of media and information on different levels (personal and professional) and aspects (social, political, and educational); and
  3. Write a six-step strategy on how to improve quality of life by becoming a media and information literate individual.

How was it? As you have observed, Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is coined. According to UNESCO, Media and Information Literacy is the ability of people to interpret and make informed judgments on the information that they consume. It can be understood as a total of motivation, knowledge, skills and habits that help to find one's bearings in the digital world, which is spreading globally.
Through MIL, it will help you to become skillful creators and producers of information and media messages in your own right.

Self-Assessment Checklist

Media and information literacy are indispensable for social progress in the present-day world. An individual and a community should possess relevant information about themselves, their physical environment and social milieu, and use such information to the greatest possible effect if they are to arrange their life reasonably and efficiently meet personal and social challenges.

By being an MIL competent citizens:
1. You are able to access, evaluate, produce and disseminate information and media content using appropriate appropriate technology;
2. understand and know their information and media rights and their responsibility for demanding free, independent and diverse information and media systems;
3. understand the role and functions of information providers and media, as well as the conditions under which these functions can be performed; and
4. You are able to create knowledge and share it widely as well as know how to engage with information providers and media for self-expression and democratic participation.
